Inspired by a wicker basket and the deck chairs that get left just as they were when families leave.

I love the way deckchairs get left in family groups. This is more draftsmanlike than most of my images as it was so nice in the first coloured draft sketch.

I just added a bit more paint and changed the blue chair from green as I loved it how it was!

Inspired by deckchairs on Brighton Beach and painted in the studio on equally hot days, when the paint was drying on the pallet almost as soon a I squeezed it out! This led to the very crunchy surface, where it looks like sand is mixed in the paint.

Brighton Beach was full of striped deckchairs this day, it was hot and someone had brought along an umbrella, but its shadow hardly covered the chair! The image is less saturated than the photo might suggest.

Brighton beach has mostly white or blue striped deckchairs, but on this day a red and white one was waiting for its next customer.

I love the way people silhouette on beaches when you look into the sun, and I'm always happy to paint anyones favourite beach and if they have such a photo, put them in as the subjects.

There is very little on this beach canvas but you can see through the water and a vague coast on the horizon, making it very like the beach that inspired it, despite the sarcity of information.

This started being painted en plien air in Cornwall and was finished in the studio.

This was East Head, at West Wittering when the tide was miles out and pools were left in the sand and gravel - every time I displayed it, everyone asked if it was East Head and the lady who bought it did to.

it took 3 attempts to get the size and content of this canvas right for the room, but it looked wonderful when up. Commissions require so much card work to deliver something that makes the client and artists go for, but it is well worth it.

Inspired by sandiness I know wetland the bird sanctuary area beyond. Every time I visit more of the sand has been washed away - one day it will break through and they will be gone for ever. I paint them as often as I can.
